PROXIMITY & BIOMETRIC READERS

Electronic Access Control Systems replace a metal key with a unique access card that is assigned to a specific person. The access control system records every use of the card thus tracking the movements of the assigned person with date and time stamps. The cards are of two major types:

• Magnetic Stripe cards have lower cost, and must be inserted or swiped by a card reader
• Proximity Cards activate the reader when placed near it and typically don’t need to be removed from a wallet or purse

The trend is towards the convenience of Proximity Cards.
Additional assurance that the user is the rightful cardholder is obtained from a second form of identification by adding a:

• Keypad that requires the user to enter a specific code to gain entry, or
• Biometric reader to scan unique features of the human body such as hand geometry, finger print, facial profile, or an iris scan.
